Our dreams and hearts' desires are for a better and more peaceful world for everyone; people and nature; for our elders
and all community members who are and can contribute so much.

Location: 4450 South Park Avenue, Suite 1115, Chevy Chase, MD 20815
connection@kathyjward.com www.kathyjward.com

* * * * *
Here are some ideas for everyone ...
  • Involve everyone in holiday music, dancing and ... exercises. Tie one or two jingle bells together with ribbon or velcro to use as "shakers"; make a wrist or ankle bracelets.
  • If you know how to guide a mindful meditation or grateful meditation session, call a local elder center, donate your time and arrange a visit with the activities or recreation director to guide a few minutes of breathing exercises and meaningful healing time.
  • Try an office holiday party with proceeds going to an elder center
  • Help elders in your community, organize and display their talents performing for the members of your community; schools, churches, community centers, hospitals, and more...
  • Donate small natural plants to elders in your community. Indoor plants, not heavy that are easy to care for. Most elders living in an institutional setting will benefit tremendously from incorporating natural elements (nature) as part of their environment.
  • Have the employees donate gifts to an elder center; nursing home, assisted living, dementia care, group home; and collect these at the party instead of exchanging gifts. Suggestions: large print books, art supplies, pharmacy products, scarves, gloves, winter clothes, stamps, holiday music, aromatherapy hand lotions, a fruit basket, blank holiday cards, and more...
  • With elders in your community, sponsor a non-violent toy drive and display in your community.
  • When visiting elders that celebrate Hanukkah (Monday, December 26th) bring them Marshmallow Dreidels. They are easy to make. Push a pretzel stick through the top of the marshmallow. Attach an unwrapped chocolate kiss to the bottom of the marshmallow with some icing. Push the pretzel into the kiss to make it more secure.
  • Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community, and culture. It is an African American holiday based on the traditional African festival of the harvest of the first crops. Kwanzaa begins on Monday, December 26 and lasts for seven days. The word Kwanzaa comes from a phrase which means "first fruits" in Swahili, an East African language. Plan a conversation about the 7 principles of Kwanzaa which are; unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperation, purpose, creativity and faith.
  • Make a PEACE CORNER in your community. Invite all members to brining their messages for a better community and a better world, photos, symbols, poems, quotes, etc... Choose a visible corner and start assembling and decorating a bulletin board.
  • Developing new skills: Donate a digital camera to the elders in your community. Teach them how to use the camera and if it is possible, teach them how to download the photos in the computer and send them by e-mail to other family or community members. Let the elders take the photos, etc...
  • Multicultural Programs: Are there plans for local cultural festivals in your community this year? Join in not only with your own cultural group, but with others as well. The Germans St Nickolas' Day, Italians will be awaiting Old Befana, Mexicans will be hoisting Pinatas and the Greek celebrate their Christmas after Dec 25, when they believe the wise men arrived bearing gifts.
  • Gather a group of community members, with their help make a list of the elders living in your community. Purchase necessary supplies to make holiday centerpieces for dining room tables or decorating hanging over the front doors. Visit the elders at their homes and surprise them with a simple and beautiful arrangement to decorate their house for the holidays.
  • Organize a tour or bus ride to view the Christmas lights in your community with elders. If possible rent a wheelchair bus to transport elders with disabilities. Remember it is an 'inclusive holiday season where everyone is invited'.
  • Organize a holiday wreath silent auction and donate the proceeds to local community projects that benefit elders.
  • Introduce yourself to other members of the community or host a holiday community gathering at your home. Ask every community member to bring their favorite holiday recipe to be exchanged.
  • Volunteer some of your time making photo albums or scrap books with the elders in your local community. Bring hot apple cider and wear a colorful outfit to add some spark to your visit.
  • Before the modern postal system, Carols were one of the only methods of sending greetings to somebody else. Form an impromptu group and go caroling around the neighborhood. It is still a very popular custom in many countries. Gather a group of friends, improvise a choir and holding electrical candles go singing holiday carols and bringing joy and warmth to your community.
  • Christmas Riddles:
What do snowmen eat for breakfast? ... Snowflakes
What do you call people who are afraid of Santa? ... Claustophobic
What is special about the Christmas alphabet? ... It has NO EL

These ideas and yours by creative listening... listening to your elders and other community members could craft your own better ways to celebrate and enjoy the winter holidays.

    PEACE be with you!

LOVE IS THE SEED OF EVOLUTION AND BETTERMENT!

EL AMOR ES LA SEMILLA DE LA EVOLUCION Y EL AVANCE!

The Journal For A Better Life provides examples of how each one of us is the caretaker and healer of our own body, mind and spirit. It helps understand our own nature as healers. LISTENING and getting to know our body, mind and soul we can develop our own personal program as we map with doctors, therapist, healers, family and friends, better ways to obtain better health and better life.

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

I am happy to be able to share with you my second publication of 2005,
the "Journal For A Better Life". This book (paperback) is a compilation of five months of testing and implementing better ways toward holistic living, nurturing my body, mind and spirit to obtain a better HEALTH and WELLNESS after being a victim of a hit and run driver. Two days after the accident and discussing with doctors, spiritual counselors, therapists and family members about what to do to help myself heal and get better, I started the "Journal For a Better Life", a personalized way to work toward WELLNESS.
