The benefits of a therapeutic garden for elders?

We are facilitating a healing place for contemplation, inspiration and renewal of the body, mind and spirit.

This will be a garden, full of life, to help everyone to stay healthy. A place for our elders to go outside of the confine of the physical building to be with plants, flowers, birds, a fountain, natural light, clean and fresh air, the blue sky, rabbits, rocks, doves and other animals. The garden is an invitation to explore, imagine, create, contemplate, socialize and connect with the spiritual self.

This healing and therapeutic garden incorporates horticultural therapy into the program by combining and facilitating informal aspects of occupational and physical therapy. Along with creativity and social integration, the garden aids our elders and caregivers in the betterment of their well-being.

Whether the elders are actually gardening (watering, weeding, and working in the herbal garden) orusing the garden as a space to try walking, group chair exercises, creative writing or simply visiting with friends or caregivers.

A healing therapeutic garden also provides sensory stimulation, motor coordination, social integration and better connection with nature, a good source of 'life energy' or (chi).

All participants were invited to design and wear a crazy hat during the program.
